Welcome to our first post!
So you may be asking, what is the American Corners? What is
it doing in Moldova? Why do we have it in the first place?
Well, let us tell you about ourselves!
The American Corner program is sponsored worldwide by the
U.S. Department of State and is a partnership between country’s host
institution and the U.S. Embassy.
The purpose of the Corners is to provide free information
to the general public about the United States through books, magazines, DVDs,
and complimentary access to the Internet.
The Corner also host a wide variety of events, such as
cultural programs and guest lectures from U.S. Embassy officials, Fulbright
scholars, and others; film and video screenings; poetry readings; conversation
and readers clubs; and many other activities.
An important mission of
the American Corners is to build bridges of understanding between people of the
United States of America and the Republic of Moldova.
In Moldova, there are
four American Corners – Balti, Ungheni, Tiraspol, and of course, our very own
city of Ceadir Lunga!
In our library, hosting
an America Corner provides great opportunity for members of the community of
all ages. Children can come in and participate in our weekly activities such as
the Film Club, Technology Club, and English Discussions. Young adults and older
citizens who are seeking materials in English for reading or studying may come
and explore our big collection of literature and study materials (SAT, ACT). In
addition, our staff is friendly and willing to help!
Here’s a bonus: all our
services are free! Come in and see what we have to offer.
If you are still learning
English and feel embarrassed about it, please don’t be shy! We are here to help
you in any ways related to American culture and the English language.
So, do you want to
improve your English? Are you curious about American culture? Do you want to
share the Moldovan and Gagauzian culture with us? Let’s be friends!
Let’s learn together.
