Why Should You Learn English?

Is English Important?

There are many languages in the world, but English is certainly one of the most important language a person can – and should – learn. Sure, thinking about learning another language may be scary, especially such a complex language as English. However, one should face their fears, and work hard to do better!

Our community of Ceadir Lunga speaks Russian and Gagauz. While Gagauz is such a rare language, our Russian language skills allow us to communicate with 150-260 million people in the world (University of Leicester, 2014). That’s a lot of people! And in the international community, Russian is a very important language.

So, we know Russian. Why learn English at all?

Here is why:

English is spoken by 330-360 million native speakers all over the world! In addition, English is spoken as a second language by an estimate of 470 million to 1 billion people (English as a Global Language, 2^nd ed, 2003).  Combining the native and second language speakers would make English as the second most widely spoken language in the world! It is the official language of the European Union.

If you can speak and understand English, you will be able to understand a majority of people in the world.

English is the primary language in conducting business, and it becomes very important for people to know English if they want to enter the international workforce. International communication between businesses (Say, from England to China or from India to USA) are conducted in English. If you want to be hired by good companies, knowledge of English is almost essential.

English knowledge may lead to better education opportunities. Harvard, Cambridge, and Oxford are some of the best universities in which English is essential.

Majority of films, literature and music are in English. Knowing this language would allow you to access these things and teach you more about the world.

Most of the things we read and watch in the internet are in English. Knowing English will let you access this great wealth of information.

In modern times, English has become such an international language, and it has become essential for interpesrsonal communication, and allows people from different cultures to understand each other.

There are many other reasons. Why don’t you come and give it a try? Do not think you are too old or too young or too busy to learn. If there is a will, there is a way after all!
